The Age of Reason was a time when the human ability to reason was glorified. The word Enlightenment means a time of illumination. Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes are considered by many historians to be the founding fathers of the Enlightenment. Bacon came to believe that science can free ordinary people from ignorance and allow them to live more productive and comfortable lives, but he knew that in order for this to happen, the mind of human bean had to be freed first from the careless and uncritical ways of thinking that were prevalent at that time, and that was why Francis Bacon promoted a rational approach to science based on experimentation, and arriving at generalization conclusion based on careful observations. Rene Descartes published a book that proclaimed reason and mathematics were all that one really needed to discover truth in the sciences. Isaac Newton was an English physicist and mathematician who is widely regarded as one of the most influential scientists of all time and as a key figure in the scientific revolution. Newton’s Principia formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation. Newton was able to understand the laws of gravity because he saw an apple fall off a tree in his garden. Isaac Newton book changed people’s mind of the understanding of the universe

Political Satire for Today
Here is a piece of satire in form of a political cartoon by Nick Anderson from the Houston Chronicles. This cartoon uses a lot of hyperbole by putting the doctor on top of the stair, stating that the access to a mental health facility is far out of reach for the mentally ill person, but the door to the gun store is wide open for everybody to come in. The statement of this cartoon is very exaggerated, referring that help for mentally ill people is far out of reach than for them to go and buy a gun. The way for the doctor office is way too far out of reach for the sick person, but the path for the gun store is a couple of feet away. The door and the signs going into the gun stores are very welcoming to anybody even for the mentally ill. The overall theme of is that the help for the mentally ill is too far and that mentally ill people are able to get their hand on a gun at any moment. A gun doesn't kill people, people kill people, the gun didn't jump off the shelf into the store and started to shoot, it people who do that . I believe that people that buy any kind of guns should have a background and mental check before been able to purchase a gun in the United States. |
